leggenda san biagio panettone pistacchio bronte sciara

February 3, is the Feast of San Biagio. Do you know why Panettone is eaten?

Dear Sciaralovers,
February 3rd is the day in which we celebrate San Biagio , protector of the throat and patron saint of our town, Bronte.

The best-known miracle of Saint Blaise is the saving of a child who was choking with a fish bone stuck in his throat.
For this reason, it has become a tradition to bless children's throats in his name on February 3rd.

But what does Panettone have to do with it?
According to a popular Milanese story, a peasant woman brought her parish priest a panettone to bless before Christmas, but then forgot it in the rectory.
The priest then began to eat it, but then the woman came back to claim it on February 3rd, the day of Saint Blaise.
The priest was just about to apologize, when in place of the empty package , a whole panettone appeared, bigger than the previous one!
For this reason, it is customary, especially in Milan, to eat some leftover panettone from Christmas on the morning of February 3rd, in the hope of keeping ailments at bay and protecting oneself from a sore throat.

Thanks to this legend, therefore, there is a delicious thread of connection between Bronte and Milan ; a connection in which San Biagio and our beloved Panettone are the protagonists 😊
